Obtaining permanent residence allows foreign nationals to live in Canada with many of the rights and privileges enjoyed by Canadian citizens, including the right to enter and live in Canada without the need to obtain specific permission to work, study, or visit.   Once foreign nationals obtain permanent residence, they must meet residency requirements and not become criminally inadmissible.  Permanent residence is also a prerequisite to a grant of Canadian citizenship.
